Area Description
The Shearwater Hotel is located in Ballinasloe in Galway. Ballinasloe occupies a strategic location on the N6 National Primary route linking Dublin and Galway and is one of the principal gateways to the West close to Athlone. The hotel has great parking and very easy to find plus near shops, the restaurant for breakfast and lunch was excellent staff very friendly, hotel room very clean and comfortable
great food, lovely staff, comfortable bed, well designed hotel, WHAT MORE COULD ONE ASK FOR?
Friendly hotel, staff very professional, food and presentation was to a high standard. Pool area very clean and well maintained.
Enjoyed our stay very much and staff are very friendly and helpful food was very good
good value excellent service
Hotel is lovely very clean and fresh. Beds very comfortable. Bedrooms laid out badly. A lot of unused space and a hallway that makes no sense to bathroom. Showers very small and hard to get into with slide doors. Temperature set and can’t be changed which is a shame as it’s cool water not hot. Food in bar is gorgeous and so fresh. Great value too. Breakfast not as good. Plenty of choice but quality of food could be much better. Overall lovely stay and would return again.
This is a lovely hotel. Evening meal was excellent, breakfast good and hotel staff very helpful. Within walking distance of the town with lots of bars and restaurants. I would definitely return here.
Lovely hotel lovely staff had a lovely night away
Great facilities and value for money lovely reception team
Lovely staff. Everywhere was spotless. Food was delicous.
Nice hotel
Very happy with our stay. Dinner and breakfast were lovely. Room was perfect
Excellent facilities and staff
Lovely hotel, very clean with friendly staff. Food was fantastic as was the breakfast I would definitely recommend it.
no service to room only towels changed and floor filthy in Bathroom
stayed in Room 204 our beds were not made up bins not emptied bathroom not cleaned no toilet roll only thing done was change of towels
Lovely staff. Great barfood and buffet breakfast.
Lovely hotel. Great facilities. Great food. Excellent staff. There was however a need for a greater number of staff in the evenings for the number of people in the hotel on the evenings we were there.

Great all together
Can’t recommend enough, lovely leisure centre, lovely food and was a nice relaxing stay.
It was a great experience. At times service a little slow due to staff shortages but overall everything was good.
Enjoyed staying here at the hotel, the hotel is lovely and food and staff were really nice . Stayed here for the music and enjoyed the stay so much going staying here again at the end of the month
Hotel v nice. Bedroom clean and nice size, bar food lovely, friendly staff, leisure centre and pool area well kept, the irish breakfast food could have been hotter!
Soulless. Despite indications that there were grounds, walks etc, there were none. One of the most unfriendly bar managers I have ever encountered. Some of the junior staff were pleasant but the hotel (and in particular the extremely rude bar manager) less than impressed. I will not be returning
Lovely hotel ,spotless all over, food was very good staff were very nice and polite enjoyed our stay.
Really nice hotel. I'd 100% recommend. The fabulous tranquility feeling in the lobby to the gorgeous breakfast. Amazing gym and leisure facilities. Staff were very helpful rooms were spotless. My only problem was, no night light. Leaving the ensuit light on resulted in a noisy fan and the hall light was to strong but, that was a very small problem!! Il be back 5star!
fabulous hotel, food good, rooms spacious and spotless, staff excellent, would definitely return
Very nice hotel for a great price, the chicken wrap in the bar is probably the best I have ever had, definitely would come back again in the future.
We had a lovely mid-week break. The hotel is very nice....large rooms and spacious hotel. We will return again! Thanks to all the staff - very pleasant stay.
Hotel was lovely, staff were great, the pool is nice but not supervised small child in the jacuzzi with adults also teenagers in the pool jumping off each others shoulders spoke to reception & the people at pool reception.
Hotel was good, pool area & how it is monitored is really not good as I told the staff there, Breakfast great, for a four star as I think it is asked for little sachet of conditioner none, not a biscuit I know maybe that's not all back there but for a four star I thought it would be, overall lovely stay our second time here thanks
Really enjoyed this hotel .Rooms very clean and very comfortable beds.Staff nice and the food is delicious. Definitely will be back again.
The hotel exceeded our expectations and everything was of a high standard.
Wonderful stay. Hotel is beautiful and staff were brilliant. Will definitely return.
Spacious, bright, clean hotel. Friendly helpful staff. Excellent food with good variety.
Beautiful hotel, friendly staff and lovely food.
Lovely homely relaxing hotel. Dinner excellent. Breakfast fair. Staff friendly & efficient. Hotel rooms cozy and clean.
Excellent location and room was great. Breakfast was excellent and the general layout and ambience of the bar was good.
Good parking, really friendly staff, very clean, great food, ideal for families. Looking forward to returning again.
Very nice stay in the Shearwater Staff were super friendly
Excellent service, clean and attentive staff. Was here previously and enjoyed both times
Beautiful hotel ,nice staff and good food ,short distance from Athlone, Clonmacnoise
Beautiful Hotel ,lovely staff, lovely food what else would u need
Food was excellent Staff very friendly and helpful lovely bedroom will go back again
Everything was very good, food was excellent
Such an enjoyable stay. Room lovely and clean. Facilities great. Food fab. Staff so friendly helpful and pleadant. One minor problem with breakfast ordered to room. Didnt arrive at time 10-10:30 as requested. Rang at 10:30 and eventually breakfast arrived at 10:50 and unfortunately food was cold. This was the only negative of our stay.
Lovely hotel, staff was excellent and the pool is really nice
First time here and certainly won't be our last. Couldn't fault a single thing. Hotel was spotless, we upgraded to the presidential suite which was beyond our expectations, so luxurious and designed to A very high standard. A lady called "Jacinta"checked us in. She was was so welcoming. The food was faultless and the service was fantastic. Breakfast was by far the best we have had in any hotel in Ireland. Covid guidelines were implemented everywhere and carried out excellently. All staff were ever so helpful. I will definitely be booking again very soon.
Beautiful modern hotel, staff very helpful especially the girl who greets you for your breakfast reservation. Would highly recommend and will definitely be returning thank you
Everything was great from check in to check out. Hotel reception is modern, spacious and tasteful it was comfortable to sit and enjoy a drink in the afternoon too. The pool area was fab mainly because the water temperature was warm which made the swim so enjoyable. The rooms are a little dated but comfortable. Overall an enjoyable stay for a short break away with the kids.
This is a fabulous hotel and would highly recommend it. The hotel was spotless clean and staff go above and beyond for our family. Can’t wait to book again. Great hotel staff
The hotel is so spacious and so we'll decorated, staff are very nice, only thing I would change is the carpets in the bedroom
We had a lovely stay. The food in the restaurant was delicious. Staff were very friendly. We would have preferred if a freshly cooked breakfast were available, but the buffet style breakfast was fine.
Spotless clean food was lovely and staff so friendly had a lovely stay at this hotel. I will be back Thanks all xx
Rooms dated but very clean, food beautiful, staff very helpful & friendly. Pool great . Overall a very nice hotel
Spotless hotel, fantastic food, superb staff make this a faultless hotel! Strict covid procedures made us feel safe and reassured. Our second time visiting, wont be our last!
Absolutely beautiful hotel. Stayed here with my 2grandchildren the hotel is spotless. The rooms are really nice and big. The pool is really nice too. The food was excellent and breakfast choice was good. I would recommend this hotel for families. The staff are so friendly and helpful. We will return again. Thanks for a wonderful stay.
Definitely a 5 star very pleased with everything our room was not ready on arrival and we got a complimentary dinner as compensation will definitely recommend to all
All of the staff in The Sheerwater Hotel were exceptional. My husband and myself congratulate the management of the hotel on securing such a brilliant workforce with each staff member helpful, thoughtful and so pleasant. The hotel needs to be updated ensuring the heating system is upgraded. Intense cleansing should also be a priority going forward.
We had a great time there. The hotel is excellent and we enjoyed the leisure centre. The good is lovely and the breakfast one of the best that we had.
everything about the hotel was good . big room, excellent dinner and breakfast, all staff friendly will go again
This is a very well run hotel. The staff are corteous, efficient and nothing was too much for them. The food was excellent as was the service. Our room was very clean and well laid out. I would highly recommend this hotel.
A COLD hotel with poor heating options, not very secure parking, The staff were lovely but stretched and pressurized resulting in them been very forgetful about food orders-food 6/10. Pool was warm and clean but the lockers didn't all have keys for secure storage and you needed a one euro coin to use in them that is not in the hotel guide information book in your room, on plus side you get free towels for pool and gym. The hotel has two elevators but only one works, resulting in long delays especially if you have a baby in a buggy and there is a concert on in the hotel.
Lovely hotel. Staff very helpful and friendly food was vey good. Only downside the bed clothes were not the cleanest. Overall we enjoyed our stay and will definitely stay there again
I have stayed at the Shearwater Hotel for a night and to say I had left disappointed to say nothing I stayed in many hotels in Ireland and could definitely say this one is far away from 4 star hotel. 1.Leisure – very basic. I felt like I am using pool in a GYM, but not in the 4*hotel. Showers in changing room are dirty. Leaks, stains and rust all over the place. There are plenty of washing liquids for chlorine raid, please use it Is someone keeping an eye on a toilets there ? Always dirty and wet. I am not a squeamish person, but felt disgusted Stairs to get down to the pool – are not fitted well, quite wobbly and not safe to use it. Steam room/sauna – were cold Chaise-longue – dirty 2.Room – Air conditioner is not working, it was impossible to sleep – so stuffy in the room. What’s more – receptionist just acknowledge the fact ( as they were aware of it, but no one ever mentioned it to us) Faulty tap – water was splashing , hot water did not work properly. Rusty water was coming from the tap. Faulty toilet, which we repaired ourselves - after using the toilet water does not stop running Tea/Coffee facilities –so basic to have tea/coffee and a cookie, but not in this “luxury place. Some B&Bs are having better options. On top of that – can you please allocate kettle next to the power socket. No freezer in the room, although there is an empty place for that TV – kids cartoons are available, but you have to pay 11 EUR for that. In addition - old blankets and torn curtains, blocked drain in the sink - full of someone hair (perhaps previous customers) 3.Dinner – why Emily called me twice to book a table ? Was a note of it done anywhere ? When we arrived to the Canal bar – no one met as at the door to welcome and conduct us to the table. So we had to walk around the place looking for a better table. I am quite tall woman and those tiny coffee tables are definitely not comfortable to have a dinner at. Food – as for a dinner menu is very plain and not much to choose from. I got chicken Cesar salad for starter and burger for the main. Salad was ok, but burger – McDonalds are having a taster one. Our daughter ordered a burger as well, was serviced with no cheese, although was not mentioned. We asked to change it – we got the same plate back, cheese was added to it, but it was melted so much that you could not feel it. It was just soaked to the bun. Also we asked to bring kid meal with our starters, but she was waiting for it until we got our mains. My husband went for chicken wings and a fish – wings were alright, served with lots of mayonnaise, fish was dry and tasteless I do not respect places who are offering deals on their own and other sites, but do not fulfil customer needs. I had a feeling that I’ve been served as a third class customer who simply got a cheap deal , so no a massive effort there ( although for a one nigh it was not so cheap ) 5.Breakfast – was alright
Absolutely fabulous, couldn't recommend more highly. Booked a night for my parent's anniversary and on arrival they received a free upgrade to the presidential suite. Breakfast was excellent also. Highly recommend this hotel
Enjoyed our one night stay in hotel. Staff and food were great. Have no complaints.
Everything that could go wrong did. Worst hotel experience we have ever had
lovely hotel, just a few minutes stroll to the town. leisure center very clean and lovely, Food first class. Will be back again,
Lovelly place to stay.
Very clean and very comfortable hotel. breakfast excellent ! Staff excellent
Great value break. Stayed overnight on bed and breakfast rate, five of us. Little confusion on check in as one room assigned was a double instead of twin room. Very quickly sorted by reception staff and housekeeping. Very clean rooms although very warm Ate in bar which was very busy. Waiting staff very friendly despite being very busy but food very disappointing. Chips undercooked. Breakfast selection very good but the hot food was very dried up from sitting under lamps for hours. Overall, good value for price paid and staff all so friendly and helpful.
Nice hotel but we suffered a few issues during our stay. From the outset of our stay the air con in the room didn't work, We asked reception would it be possible to have this checked out for us which they said of course, we heard no more from them on the issue but the air con was not fixed. On checking out it was pointed out that the air con was not working and the receptionist told us that there was an ongoing issue and did the maintenance guy not leave a note to inform us... which he didn't. The toilet constantly flushed for the first day of our stay but in fairness Maintenance did fix this issue. On our second night approx. 12.30am we were awoke to the sound of a blaring fire alarm,,, it sounded for what seemed an eternity. We rang reception to see what the cause was and was there need for evacuation and eventually got a night receptionist who seemed confused at what was going on... eventually found out it was people smoking in a room. The food in the bar was very nice and the staff particularly in the bar where very helpful and really approachable nothing was to much trouble for them. All in all our stay apart from a few issue was pleasant the hotel is a nice comfortable hotel with good leisure facilities.
We arrived 3rd April not 8th. Overall I had a great time. Great Points; -Beautiful Lobby/Lounge area, really loved walking into the hotel reception & it would look great for a wedding. -Food was gorgeous for breakfast & in the Bistro, goats cheese tartlet, burger & piri piri chicken burger were all gorgeous -Room was spacious considering the girl on the phone had warned us it would be tight but I felt the opposite considering there were 5 of us in the room -Kids Club was great, took the kids for 5 hours Saturday night -Underground parking was perfect & no charge despite the parking machines -Located only 1.5hrs from Dublin -Hotel left the kids easter eggs in the room -Pool was great And my favourite point, breakfast was until 11am A number of little things which brought me to give the 3 stars & not 4. A few of those listed below; -They charged us for breakfast for our 2 kids ages 4 & 6. I feel €20 was a bit steep considering the kids only had a bowl of cereal. Very petty to charge for such small kids breakfasts. I can understand charging for evening meals extra but breakfast? Bit petty. -Advertised they show Football on BT but they don't have the channel. The poster is even in the bistro but they actually don't have the channel which is a joke. -Showers in the leisure centre could do with updating as the smell from the drains was rough -Bad smell in the hallways upstairs -Walls in bedrooms had a lot of scrapes on them which could easily be polished with a coat of paint. Overall a great hotel.
we stayed 27th and 28th march 15... Lovely hotel,,room was very nice and the evening meal was fab...staff were very nice...loved the pool...the only down side it was not close to many attractions..but over all a lovely stay... Alan and Claire
had a lovely time food good staff very nice, hotel very nice very good deal from lidl thank you.
Lovely hotel with helpful and attentive staff. The dinner was good and the staff were really nice. The only downfall is the breakfast which was not of a standard I have seen in other hotels. Well worth the visit and will go back again
We really enjoyed our 2 night break at the Shearwater Hotel, Ballinasloe. Large comfortable rooms, good food and very friendly and attentive staff. Will visit again!
Had a 2 night B&B stay here on 6th March. The hotel is really nice, very spacious welcoming foyer. Very modern and extremely reasonable. The reception staff, bar staff, waiting on staff were all very efficient and very friendly. We stayed in an executive room, which was lovely, not the biggest room but had everything you needed and extremely clean. The bed was so comfy. Breakfast was great, food always freshly laid out and there was anything that you wanted there. We ate in the Bistro both evenings and cannot fault the food. Didn't use the leisure centre but it looked lovely. The manager on duty in the Bistro was constantly walking around, making people welcome and ensuring that everyone was being looked after, and when the bar got busy he pulled up his sleeves and gave the bar staff a dig out, you don't see managers doing that every day. There are so many seating areas around the foyer if you didn't want to stay in the bar/bistro. There was live music on in the bar both night. In a great central location and about 15 minutes drive into Galway City. I would highly recommend this hotel for a stay in a great location with easy access to the beautiful scenic Galway. We'll be back.
Booked through Lidl breaks B&B +Dinner 50 euro pp. Sounded a little cheap so wasn't expect much from the food. Asked before arrival for a quiet room and a 2pm check-in and got both no problem.Hotel was what you expect from a 4* hotel chain. Pool and gym ticked all the boxes same for the room except view from the north side rooms was terrible. A wedding on both nights so plenty of life about. Went for our dinner in the Canal Bistro Bar with a little trepidation, but was pleasantly surprised. On both nights our starters and mains were of excellent quality and well presented. I had seafood on both nights and it was 10 out of 10. On our second night it was busy due to a large wedding and we had to wait a little between courses. When we asked for the bill for the extra side orders and wine we ordered i was shocked they said there was no charge due to the delay with our mains!!!!!!!! The service was just excellent. Needless to say we left a good tip. Room Tip: Room on the south side
Spent a night in the Shearwater hotel for my 50th Birthday back in October and I have to say it was an amazing experience. Had a fantastic meal and the bar staff were so friendly and helpful. Nothing was a problem even asking for strawberries at 2am for my Champagne. The room were fab and I had an amazing treatment in the spa. I would highly recommend this hotel and I will definitely be back for more pampering in the near future. Compliments to all the hotel staff for their professionalism
FIRE ALARM WHEN OF THREE MORNINGS AT 4AM NOT PLEASENT WITH A 2 YEAR OLD FOOD NOT GREAT BUT STAFF VERY FRIENDLY AND HELPFUL
Great weekend at the Shearwater Hotel, the staff were great and very obliging. We will return again for sure.
This hotel was very comfortable with friendly staff and nice food. The pool was a nice size and not too busy in the evening when we used it.Its a busy time of the year and there were many families staying in the hotel. Nice hotel centrally located
We stayed here about 18 months ago and made a return visit last weekend. We were pleased to see that the breakfast has improved and overall improvements.
This was a nice hotel. Staff and food were very good
Lovely hotel, friendly staff and food was lovely, will stay again
Excellent hotel. Nice room - bed extremely comfortable! Bar food was very good and waiter discreetly attentive. Breakfast excellent. Would recommend to anybody.
All in all we enjoyed our break in the shearwater. The stand out factor for us was how amazing all the front line team were. From the moment we checked in to the time we checked out every member of staff we encountered delivered a 4☆ experience if not more. Unfortunately the food at the Shearwater did not. Our meal on the first night was average but it all went downhill from there. We were v dissapointed with breakfast on both mornings and the steaks ordered in the bar on second night were disastrous. The staff did offer us comp desserts or drinks but we had a tired tiddler with us and could not avail. The food aside our experience was other wise mire than positive. I feel a special mention to Serena on check in who was helpful in every way & Judy in the Spa who brought me to heaven and back with some amazing treatments.
We were very pleased with our stay in the Carlton Shearwater. Friendly staff, professional service and excellent value. Refurbishment should be considered.
Lovely stay at the Carlton Shearwater, Friendly staff, rooms very clean.
My wife & I stayed for just one night & as we were very pleased with the experience the next time we are in that area we intend to stay for longer. The place is well maintained, very clean, rooms are spacious & comfortable, food is good, staff are friendly & it's good value. Also no need to worry about the weather as the basement car park has a lift direct to reception.
disappointing. carpet stained in bedroom, doors scratched, bathroom could have been cleaner - very grotty under the taps etc. Ok but could have been better.
The hotel is very big and open plan. Great for family breaks or groups. Loads of place for kids to run around. The staff are extremely friendly and helpful and the food although we didn't eat as had eaten dinner earlier on way looked fantastic. There was an offer on for dinner for two with a bottle of wine for €50 and they had early bird specials also which looked good. The room was just ok in comparision to other hotels. It would be classed as cheap and cheerful and small enough. Everything was clean although the window in room 246 wouldn't shut and forgot to mention this on departure. Also the toilet had extremely bad flush so not great as far as a family concerned. The breakfast was self service and very nicely presented. Wouldn't like the leisure centre at all and this is where i would completely dock marks. The steam room when entering you could smell the dirtiness. The tiles are all falling off the seated area and just lying there when no caution sign. Very bad form. The swimming pool is quiet deep if unable to swim you have to resort to the childrens pool which is small and only able for a few kids and not a surge of parents unable to swim also. Enjoyed the stay but wouldn't return as the Leisure centre is a letdown. I would give it 5 out of 10 marks wise
Nice hotel ,good value, very busy bar, food OK,Breakfast Ok except for the cold coffee both mornings Would stay again.
Stayed April 14, one night. Staff lovely, room large with balcony but disappointingly looked over unkempt back of hotel. Staff lovely food great. Only negatives were bar quite cool in evening and extra items added to our bill from the bar that was not ours, but were refunded without any argument. Would stay again and recommend.
Went to this hotel with my friend for a night, we used the pool area which was lovely, had dinner in the bar included in this deal which was quite good. The hotel was very busy and had a good atmosphere. Our room was big and everything was spotless. Staff were friendly too. We would go back here. Great value.
Stayed at the Carlton Shearwater Hotel in April 2014. Rooms were spacious, staff very friendly and excellent leisure facilities. We were a family of 4 with 2 small children. Would definately reccommend this hotel for a family break.
had a lovely stay at this hotel, excellent hotel. Staff very friendly, courteous and helpful,. Leisure Centre very good, also pool, sauna, etc. breakfast and bar food excellent. would definitely recommend this hotel as a lidl break, great value for money. Mary
We booked for two nights, when we booked we were told we were going to get interconnecting rooms as we are family of 4, when we arrived we were put in one room. The washbasin had a large crack in it and part of the bath tub came away in my hand. It had obviously been through the wars. The hotel night porter gave someone our room while we were in there, somebody opened our door at 11.30 at night. We were shocked and I immediately went to reception to complain, as we have two young children and were obviously worried about security. I saw the general manager in the morning, he was very apologetic and said it was human error, i told him i was surprised that the system did not alert the porter that the room was occupied. He said he would upgrade us which he did but the heating was not working where the children were sleeping. We found the staff very friendly and helpful, the food was very good and the leisure facilities were excellent. We all really enjoyed the swimming pool and it was very clean and a good temperature. When I went to settle my bill on departure, there were additional items that we never had despite signing for what we had in the restaurant, the general manager implied he would do something for us as a gesture of goodwill but he was not there and was told he was in a meeting and could not be disturbed. the duty manager said he would take 56 euros off the bill but this included the additional items so we did not get the benefit. I have no problem in recommending your hotel which I already have done to members of my family who live in Ireland
Hotel was lovely, staff very friendly, stayed one night and entertainment was very good
Six of us recently stayed in the Carlton Shearwater Hotel Ballinasloe. The hotel was lovely and the staff couldn't have been nicer or more helpful. However, the temperature left a lot to be desired. Every evening in the bar, around 9.00 the temperature dropped and it felt like the air conditioning was turned up and the draft or breeze was very uncomfortable. The doors to the bar always seemed to be left open which didn't help the overall atmosphere as the draft coming in was very unpleasant. The bedrooms were not that warm either. Everything else was fine. The swimming pool was lovely and clean and the staff again were very pleasant. The sauna and steam room could have been a little hotter.
Lovely staff and hotel foods lovely only down set was dinner served in bar would recommend
Upgraded to suite for 25euro, wasnt happy as not what I considered a suite, reception moved us and returned the money. The standard room was lovely and to be honest, larger. Dinner was yummy, really good standard and chef accommodated for my gluten free needs. Breakfast was poor, possibly because we were eating at 720am and they started serving at 7am, but was very disappointing. Pool was large clean and warm, very enjoyable swim and sauna. Staff were all lovely. Hotel was spotless throughout. Plenty of parking. Would stay again
Had a really lovely weekend in the Hotel. We will definitely be going back again. Hotel was lovely I was really impressed by the size of the lobby and how child friendly the hotel was. Staff were very friendly.
stayed at Carlton Shearwater in december for 2 nights, lovely hotel food was lovely and service was very good, rooms are very clean ,will use this hotel again
we stayed in the carlton shearwater hotel for 3 nights in december. the rooms were excellent, very comfy beds and quiet room at night. the bar and restaurant were both good, service was excellent, even with a wedding on. a young waiter (tony) coped very well in the busy bar. overall, an enjoyable break and we will be back.
stayed here on Saturday night with my sisters to celebrate a birthday. booked two room but when I opend the door to one of the rooms, it was already occupied ! got another room sorted quickly. air conditioning in one of the rooms was leaking and as a result the carper was soaking. They put a bin underneath it ?? however, they did offer to change us to another room but at this stage we had unpacked. the restaurant was full so we had to have dinner in the bar area - not a problem. the service was extremely slow - food cold and not what we ordered. I ordered chicken and got salmon and one of our party order well done steak and got it quite rare. Staff friendly but would not rate this as a 4 star hotel. would I stay here again? probably not.!!
Beautiful hotel, music entertainment in the bar was great. lovely atmosphere. would recommend this hotel. Great value for money.
Stayed with my family for three night break. Hotel is a bit deceiving from the outside, but inside it is warm and welcoming. Staff were friendly and helpful throughout the hotel. Bedroom was comfortable and quiet. Breakfast was very good with plenty of choice. Had dinner on three evenings as part of package and food was very good, but disappointed with Table D'hôtel menu as it was the same every evening! Could have upgraded to A la Carte, at extra cost. Leisure centre was OK but pool is plain. Would go here again.
Hi My family and i stayed at the Carlton Shear-water Hotel last week. I can say that the hotel is spotless my room and the bathroom where very clean. This hotel is very accommodating to families i have two young children and i felt very a easy with the children been in the hotel. The only thing i would say is that service in the bar when you are having food was extremely slow.
Sadly found it to be very disappointing and so not a 4 star hotel. There was not enough staff in any section of the hotel. There was what looked like blood splatters all along the wall by the mirror in bathroom and the door architrave. We booked a family room and I requested a king size bed and cot as our son sleeps with us as he was teething . We got a double bed!!! The cot was broken . They did offer us a family room but at that stage my son was been settled for the night. We were told that the reason we didn't get a family room was because there was son music on the hotel!!!. The food was ok but again waiting ages and our waitress was not great and issued wrong menus! The baby bowl was terrible and had to be sent back as veg were so hard I couldn't mash them with a fork! My son has two teeth. Eventually when we got it liquidised my son was creating a stink as so hungry . My personal experience was not the only one as was talking to others and found it to be severely understaffed . It's a putty as this was our first trip away with our son and would never go back there again !
The staff were very friendly and helpful- we requested a quiet room as there was a wedding on during our stay and they obliged and we got a quiet room at the very end of a corridor, away from the function room. The hotel facilities are great with the leisure club and spa in the hotel, so lots to do if you don't want to venture into Ballinasloe itself. Food was average and the bar food at the weekend was very pricey - 15 euro for a burger and chips. We also had a meal in the restaurant 30 euro per person for three courses- food was nothing special but the restaurant itself was lovely and the girl serving us was very nice. The major downfall of the hotel and the reason I would not recommend or return is the wear and tear of the hotel. Our room carpet was destroyed in stains, sink in the bathroom was very badly cracked, sofa's in the lobby were ripped in places, chairs in the restaurant stained and the list goes on. It is such a pity as I would say in its day it was a stunning hotel.
the family had a great time.it was so good we booked 3 days stay but we rebooked an extra day it is well worth it for the kids and the kids club was great it gave us the parents that littel bit of peace and quiet.if i can get a deal like that one i will be going back with the family. the staff in every area of the hotel went out of there way to make sure that we were looked after.
Very nice hotel and great service. Food in the bar was fantastic. Only issue was that we were looking for a family room with a separate internal (or inter-connecting) bedroom for the kids. The only family room description on the website matched this, but when we booked we were advised that this was not a standard family room, and it was only available at an additional €25 per night. They did cede on this cost after our explanation however.
Great Hotel - really comfortable rooms (we had a two bed family suite which was a lovely surprise). Only downside was that the water in our room wasn't very hot - mentioned to the receptionist on check-out. Leisure centre was really kid friendly with a lovely, warm pool.
Went for one night have stayed hear before but was very dissapointed this time, was in bed next morning 9.o'c when my room door was opened by another guest when i complained i got no satisfaction as to how this could happen since i had the two keys to the door...... still waiting for an explanation ...... Patricia
Hi, Myself my husband and two of our children stayed in the Carlton Shearwater for two nights on bed and breakfast basis. We really enjoyed our stay. On arrival we were greated by a lovey lady in reception, who kindly went through all the aspects of the hotel and leisure facilities. Our room was lovely and spacious. The food in both the bar and the restaurant were excellent and all the staff were very kind and obliging. We used the pool facilities which we really enjoyed and the hotel is also located a short distance from Galway on one side and Athlone on the other wwith loads of things to keep everyone entertained. We found the whole experience a very relaxing and enjoyable one and would recommend this hotel to everyone and will stay there again. the breakfast was fabalous and again all the staff from cleanng to bar and catering as well as reception staff to be brillant. Thanks to Lidl and to the Shearwater for a wonderfull stay.
had a grt stay at the shearwater hotel, very nice food and lovely room. it was excellent valley for money ,i would recommend lidl breaks excellent
went for paddys day wife and 2 kids no problems thanks
I booked the Carlton Shearwater as the Connaught Dancing championships were being held over the whole weekend. Having attended the championships before it is always a busy weekend and so I made sure that I would have my dinner included when booking my room. I was given a voucher at reception and told that it could be used in the bar or restaurant anytime from 4.30 to 9.30. I was very disappointed on arriving for dinner at 4.30 (the only time between dances that we were free to eat) when told by a member of bar staff that I could not use my voucher til after 6pm. As I had two children dancing between 6 and 9pm this posed a problem for me. The bar staff member was very abrupt ,short and quite rude in her manner and did not appear to care or be helpful in anyway. I returned to the bar at 9.15pm having not eaten to order my dinner before last orders were taken and again the same member of bar staff told me that I was too late and it seemed to me that it was an effort for her to even speak to me. When I complained she took my order very unwillingly and was served without as much as a smile or a thank you. Another waitress apologised to me and told me that I should have been served food before 6pm. I really think for a hotel the size of the Shearwater and for an event as big as the championships that dinners/food could be more flexible whether prebooked or not in a weekend where lots of families were staying. This encounter upset myself and my children and certain staff members seemed very unhappy in their jobs and really need training in how to speak to clients/customers. I am not a person that ever complains, the room and staff at reception were fine, but overall the bar was a very unwelcoming place to be and I was made feel that I putting THEM out. Very disappointing!!!!!! Regards, Colette Rattigan
Had a lovely family weekend here. Food Was lovely and staff were all really friendly. Our children really enjoyed the Kids club. Would definitely stay here again.
fantastic break at the carlton shearwater hotel on feb23rd enjoyed by all
had the most relaxing weekend hotel was lovely and the resturant very staff were lovely and very helpfull so i would recomend this hotel for either a family or nice quiet get away
Me and my sisters had a night here in Feb 2013, The rooms were very good and spacious, The shower in my room did not work though which was a pity, I was not offered any money off for this so that was very dissappointing! On the other hand our meal was fabulous.
Thoroughly enjoyed our one night stay. Took advantage of both the gym and pool. We found both the Reception and bar staff very professional, friendly and attentive. The room was very clean and comfortable. We will definitely make a return visit.
Lovely hotel. Health club and spa are first class. Staff are friendly and effiecient.
the Hotel is lovely. there was a pool and gym there too which I used. breakfast was lovely and the staff were very friendly and polite. we had a late lunch and a drink with it. food was fine, but the drink was not great to be honest ( Guiness and carlsberg) overall enjoyed our stay and would book again.
Thoroughly enjoyed our 1 night at the Shearwater. Excellent hotel, as always!!! Staff at Reception are so friendly and helpful, bar staff very friendly also. Very good breakfast and bar food excellent. No complaints at all, would highly recommend it to anyone. Great value for money. room size excellent, also pool, sauna, steam room and jacuzzi very good. Would definitely stay here again Ten out of Ten!!!!!!! Well done......... 5*****
an excellent hotel room was very good staff were very good all in all a very good stay
Very nice hotel, staff very friendly, will be going back again for sure . Peter hayden
The hotel was lovely rooms staff swimming pool were great. The only thing we taught on easter sunday night for a bar that was busy with lots of families with kids there was nothing on for them, there was no atmosphere and 3 big screen tvs with only golf on, a bit of music would have been nice and food was very basic would have got better at a chipper.
Great Hotel, friendly staff, the children enjoyed the kids club, they have an offer (April) on at the moment 4 course for two plus a bottle of wine for €49
We booked our break for last weekend and were quite excited about going off especially after looking at photos on The Carlton Shearwaters website. For two adults & two children, €148 for a two night break B&B sounded to good to be true. When we arrived we were advised that there was a delay with checking in which should have been 3pm, no problem I said, the lady asked would we like to upgrade to a 2 bedroom suite for a cost of €50 for the two nights, delighted with that offer we said yes. Went back & forward to reception approx. 4 times to be told there was still a delay. At 5.30 we were eventually told our room was ready, a double room......... I asked about the upgrade and she said no there must have been a mistake there was none available.......few words said me not impressed suddenly there was one available!!!! Checked in room lovely, delighted. Barstaff during the day were not very pleasant, one girl I tried to get her attention to order food, shouted at me I'd have to wait til she was ready. Lounge boy did serve us but looked like his uniform had not been washed in 6 weeks. Food was nice though when it did come. It was Easter Sunday , it was bit busy but didn't warrant staff being rude or filthy. Breakfast, again was busy but not out the door, buffet was not well stocked at all, not pleasant standing around waiting on fried eggs. All in all the hotel was lovely, clean, most staff pleasant, pool area lovely, towels etc well stocked, clean.
We stayed over the Easter weekend and so the hotel was very busy, which was good to see! It meant we had to wait a little while for our room to be ready but the staff were most friendly and pleasant and this more than compensated for the slight delay. The dinner was excellent and we very much enjoyed the pool in the Leisure Centre. We felt our stay in the Carlton Shearwater represented great value for money and have no hesitation in recommending this hotel.
Nice spacious hotel with lots of areas to relax. Breakfast dissapointing as selection of food on offer very limited. Temperature of kids swimming pool was brilliant. Most of the staff friendly and obliging. Overall a nice stay and children loved it.
We stayed for two nights and we were very happy with the accomodation. Very friendly staff , the rooms were spacious clean and comfortable. I would recommend this hotel . Great value for money.
Nice comfortable hotel located in the midlands. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Good value for money when booked on Lidl site but you won't get the same value on any other site. We just had bar food which was pricey enough. €28 for an 8oz filet steak is very expensive!!!
Excellent hotel.Professional and friendly staff. Spacious and comfortable rooms. Lovely clean and warm leisure centre.
Just back from a 2 night stay in the Carlton Shearwater. On the first night we arrived down quite late and thought we would just have food and drinks in the bar, my food was lovely however my boyfriend got food poisioning from a badly cooked hamburger. Breakfast on saturday morning was amazing, had it delivered to the room and was just perfect, breakfast on sunday took them three attempts to get right, but even the end result was severly disappoint. Hotel was good value for money, but was let down by the breakfast on Sunday and obviously dont eat the burger!
Fantastic Value at this hotel, it is a lovely hotel. Great Leisure Centre, Bar food was also very good. Great Breakfast and staff so helpful. Would definitely stay here again, and would highly recommend it to anyone. Star Rating 5 *****
sheila myself and my sister stayed for one night on a dinner bed and breakfast deal. we could not fault the hotel at all. helpful, friendly staff; room and leisure facilities very good; food lovely. would definitely recommend and would stay here again.
The hotel was amazing. The staff were very friendly and accomadating. The food was fantastic. The Kids loved the hotel and the pool, so it gets a thumbs up from us.
The hotel was excellent, we had a lovely family Break. Food was lovely. Staff were excellent. The kids loved the kids club. The Spa treatment were heaven
Stayed here recently for a weekend. We were given a free upgrade on arrival to an executive room. Hotel was very comfortable and clean. Staff were very helpful and polite Food was very good though menu was limited for Lidl break guests.
Had a perfect stay at this Hotel. Room lovely, breakfast great. Leisure Centre is excellent, staff very helpful and nice. Definitely would recommend it to friends for a break.
one of the nicest hotels we stayed in,very high standards, lovely food will be back soon T Lynch
very good value for money. Only thing it does not cater for single people who require a single room so they can not avail of offer. There's a big number of singles out there who need to be catered for.
Customer service was good, but the room facilities, room furniture was poor. Carlton need to upgrade and invest in hotels as a company. Overall a three star rating.
Stayed 17th & 18th May on dinner, bed & breakfast basis. Breakfast on 1st morning was cold at around 9 a.m. Most hotels do self service for fruit, juices & cereal but take customer's order for cooked breakfast, toast & tea. Maybe this has something to do with staff costs? Only 2 girls on duty that morning. Very difficult to keep food hot without drying it out. Black pudding was awful. Breakfast was a bit better on the 2nd morning. Room comfortable & dinner on both nights excellent. Very good leisure facilities & helpful friendly staff. Lidl breaks are still great value. Dave & Marie, Dublin.
We enjoyed our stay at Shearwater Ballinasloe. The food was excellent and bedroom very comfortable. We would certainly have no hesitation in going back again.
The Hotel itself was lovely! Friendly & helpful staff.swimming pool and leisure was great. The only thing I could fault really was the %u20AC7.50 charge for room service, 2 sandwiches costing %u20AC18.50 and even for inclusive breakfast there's %u20AC7.50 charge to the room? Fair enough if you want to charge but I think %u20AC7.50 is very steep! The location for such a nice hotel is ridiculous, the town had nothing of interest and was very boring. And the entertainment in the Hotel was a little dull! we were a young couple so maybe I just wanted a little something more lively. Ideal for people who need a quiet break
Excellent value for money. Much appreciated.
We stayed in the Carlton Shearwater hotel for two nights and really enjoyed our stay. Rooms were very well maintained. Both the bar food and restaurant dining were immensely enjoyable. MOST of the staff were very friendly and helpful. We would highly recommend this hotel and look forward to returing.
Really enjoyed our stay in the Carlton Shearwater on 12th March - nice room, good food, good leisure centre and efficient staff. Thanks Lidl, for great value for money. Carol
We stayed for two nights on the Lidl special two nights and it was great value. Everything about this hotel is excellent.
really enjoyed our break.. hotel is fab and spa was gorgeous lovely freindly staff!! food excellent too definite 5 stars!
The hotel was lovely! We got the b&b break for 39pp and it was great value. Breakfast was great - there was a great selection of diff foods, we had dinner too in the bar (not included in the deal) and it was lovely but portions were quite small for the price. All the staff that we met were nice and always willing to help. We didn't get to use the pool or gym area but I think there'll be next time! We got distracted by the hot italian rugby team staying there lol!
I can't fault the hotel except for one thing, we had to pay full price for entry to Jimmy Buckley on the Sunday night. Normally hotels offer some sort of concession on this. The break itself was excellent value for money and I will certainly use them again.
great hotel, staff lovely. had a nice relaxing time.
Fairly in the middle of nowhere. The restaurant closed on one of the nights we were there although they served the a la carte menu in the bar that night. The spa area had nothing only a relaxation room, although it shared the facilities of the leisure centre which was good. The childlren's pool in the leisure centre was closed one of the days which meant holding our toddler in the big pool for an hour. The room was basic but clean and more like a 3 star..no mini bar, or fridge etc., but did have tea/coffee making facilities. The fire alarm went off in the middle of the night at 4 am albeit for 10 seconds, but it was a siren in our room and it took a while to go back to sleep. Exceptionally good value though, so while I won't be returning, it's hard to complain.
Bed is not so comfortable. Room lights are very dim. Spa treatment was not that great.Heating is not so good. Staffs are very friendly. Nice food. Overall 3.5 star.
Stayed 2 nights 11th Feb, nice enough hotel, bed not very comfortable quite hard, requested feather pillows we where left one without pillowcase. Bedroom nice, bathroom very small, no showercaps. Breakfast is buffet style, cold and hot food, sausages tasted very strange, some yoguarts would have being nice. Staff friendly. Pool area nice enough but perferred the one in Westport Linda, Cavan
The hotel facilities were impeccable, except the sauna, wasn't very warm. Lovely pool and jacuzzi. Towels are provided on arrival too, which is a bonus We had a slight problem with the room, we didn't specify smoking or non-smoking.. so they gave us a smoking room, we called reception and a few minutes later someone came to take us to a new room. If you go to the room and want it nice and warm, turn off the air conditioning as even in the hottest settings there was cold air blowing in. The beds were nice and comfortable. Nice ambiance at the bar and dinning room was lovely too. great stay overall
simply a fantastic hotel all round
we stayed one nite in hotel. it was excellent. pool was lovely and warm. resturant had great servous and food was excellent. very spacious hotel. vert friendly staff. would recommend it to any one. anne roscommon
I would give it 4 stars and it was excellent value for money
My wife, myself and our five year old stayed for three nights on a B&B basis in the Carlton in early January 2011. We found the whole staff - front of house, cleaning, service and leisure centre - to be extremely pleasant and welcoming. The hotel was warm and comfortable and our room was very pleasant and certainly of a four star standard. The hotel provides underground parking and is virtually in the town, though Ballinasloe itself has very little to offer!! We really enjoyed our stay and we would highly recommend the Carlton Shearwater. It is a hotel we will definitely make a return visit to.
Had a wonderful time. Staff were excellent and food was good. Rooms were to a high standard. Only fault was that on both days there were no towels available in the SPA. Also only found one staff member to be less than obliging at the bar.
We had a lovely stay over the new year was very busy. The staff were lovely. We would consider going agiain.
We stayed at the Carlton Shearwater hotel on Monday 27th December. We were attending a concert that evening. We had been looking forward to some heat and water and a bit of comfort as we had none of them in our house due to frost and snow. We checked in and we were allocated a room. When we opened the door the first thing we saw was a half pint glass of lager on a shelf, red stains (which looked like blood) on the carpet, which turned out to be dried in red wine. The dressing table was messed with something that resembled yoghurt, which we didnt notice until we returned to the room to go to bed. Now I am not a fussy person, but in my opinion the room was not cleaned properly. We had relatives staying at the hotel the same night who had to move to another room as the heating did not work in their room. In the room that they moved into, they realised during the night that they were in an interconnecting room, which was not locked. They did not sleep at all that night worrying about this security issue and that people could walk into their room any time. All in all things were not up to standard in my opinion
Had a wonderful stay. Hotel is at a very high quality and service was good. Excellent value for money!
I was disappointed not to be able to get a treatment from the spa but must book earlier next time. The room didn't have a robe to allow the guest to take a swim without taking a change of clothes to the pool area - it put me off going. However, the staff were very helpful. The hotel is very clean and extremely good value. The food was excellent.
LIdl break was great value and the hotel was excellent, lovely room and great facilities. As we were with a group for a birthday celebration our meal was excellent and the staff were great. FIVE STAR rating all the way. Regards Joe Macdonald.
We stayed for two nights in November. Hotel was excellent, rooms very clean & modern. Staff very friendly. Resturaunt very good for Dinner & Breakfast. Bar very busy and comfortable. Ballinasloe is a small town but Location is quite convenient to Galway & Athlone.
We had a lovely weekend break in the Carlton Shearwater Hotel in Ballinasloe Co. Galway. From the moment we checked in the staff could not have been more helpful. We had a small problem with our room and we were upgraded immediately to a superior room. The food was superb and the service was excellent. The beds were massive and very comfortable. The foyer is very impressive. We were guests at a wedding on the Friday and it went off like clockwork and everyone was loud in their praise of the venue and the service. I never before saw a manager so busy in ensuring that everybody was served promptly. I had booked this weekend through the Lidl-Breaks Offer for a group of eight and everyone said it was excellent value.I would have no hesitation in recommending this hotel to my friends. Pat Reidy, Belmullet, Co. Mayo
We recently stayed in the Carlton Shearwater for a wedding. We arrived the morning of and managed to secure an early check in. The reception staff were wonderful very helpful in every way. The function room was decorated beautiful and the staff were excellent.......Following a leisurely breakfast in bed we went down to enjoy the leisure centre again staff were helpful and polite but the temperature of the facilities was disappointing, jacuzzi, and sauna were tepid at best. We had lunch in the bar and booked dinner in the restaurant for later that evening, food was sensational with a wide and varied selection in the bar however we later discovered the reason......... the menu is the same in both..... but with such a varied selection we ate both times without complaint. A mixed wine selection was available from budget to indulgent. I would recommend a stay here to friends, family and colleagues alike, the greatest feature this hotel offers is their well trained, polite, helpful and friendly staff!
Stayed in the Shearwater when attending a wedding and really enjoyed our stay. The hotel is very conveniently located in the town and parking is plentiful. Our room was spacious and the bed was a good size too. The only issue we had was the air conditioning in the ballroom during the wedding made the room quite cold - don't know why you'd need this in Ireland in October! The wedding meal was delicious and so was our breakfast the next day. All in all I'd highly recommend this hotel and will also be using Lidl breaks again.
I had a fantastic time in ballinasloe, the hotel was gorgeous and me and my boyfriend even got an upgrade to a suite. it was stunning, the breakfast was lovely, great variety and choice. the only thing that really didnt impress me was that because me and my boyfriend are only 19, the staff weren't very polite to us and when i asked a question to the women at reception about the leisure centre her response first she looked both of us up and down and asked "are ye even staying here, no?" the bar staff were roughly the same age as us and were "too cool" to be nice to us We would definitely recommend the hotel othwise the value for money was great! especially since we got an upgrade! really nice and clean hotel.
Hotel was exactly what was promised it was an amazing getaway, Staff were so friendly and helpful, we were booked to saty for one night and decided to stay another night as it was so realaxing, we booked a few treatments and the spa was stunning the therapists were so warming and our therapist had "the golden touch" treatments were amazing. We will be back again soon
beautiful hotel with excellent and helpful staff.only drawback is if you want to go into Galway City,a good 40 minute drive everytime. Spa service was brilliant, and I will definitely be recommending the Carlton Shearwater to friends!
We recently stayed in the Carlton Shearwater in Ballinasloe. I have to say that the whole experience from arriving and checking in to departure was excellent. The Staff were extremely accomodating and pleasant. The food in the Restaurant was second to none( The Chocolate Cake was a dream). The rooms were well equipped and spacious. All round I think it was brilliant.
great value for money will be using lidl breaks again. i have already told friends and famliy about it
I REALLY ENJOYED MY STAY AT THE CARLTON .I THOUGHT THE STAFF WAS COURTEOUS AND ATTENTIVE. MY DAUGHTER AND I USED THE SPA WHICH I WOULD RATE VERY HIGHLEY,AND THE SPECIAL OFFERS ON SPA TREATMENTS WERE EXCELLENT VALUE. I WOULD RECOMMEND THE CARLTON SHEARWATER TO MY FRIENDS. CORA 18-8-10 CORA 19-8-10
great value but not a 4 star hotel.food very ordinary.fire alarm went off at 3 am then the power failed with no explanation.what we couldnt understand was why the accomodation people tried to service the room at 8.55 a m when we were leaving that day.will definitely use lidl breaks again but alas not this hotel.
Hotel was nice. Needed to have room changed as the window in the room we where given didn't lock and was quite noisy because of the road. Was embarrassing that after we changed room someone else was also given the same room and walked in when we were in Bed.
Many thanks I really enjoyed my stay in the CharltonShearwater Hotel in Ballinasloe Enda Phelan
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in the carlton shearwater. The food was beautiful and we were treated with extreme coutesy from the minute we arrived. Our room was lovely and very spacious with every amenity that we required. we are looking forward to going back in October.
Well done to the hotel management and all the staff on tending to our groups needs at such short notice. Great service in comfortable surrondings and fabulous food
nice hotel, great road there from dublin, rooms average, food very nice, staff very friendly and helpfull.
it was fantastic. We a family of 5 upgraded to a family suite for an extra %u20AC25 and it was so lovely, two large bedrooms, 1 with a balcony, lovely large bathroom. Food super for the dinner and staff so friendly from start to finish. Pool was great an used it on the day of arrival and leaving. We are quiet fussy but it reallly was a great break and we will defo go again
excellent facilitiessuperb frienly staff, very helpfull, had a freat stay
