Deirdre scored 4 / 5 on 04/05/2022

excellent hotel staff and food very good . the only thing that was a problem was believe it or not was the heating in the room which was excessively warm even when the rads were cold which led me to believe that it must be under floor heating reminded me of my trips to Spain

Ciaran scored 5 / 5 on 29/04/2022

This was my first stay in this hotel and I was impressed with it, so much so that I have already booked two rooms for June. Everything about the hotel (large spacious rooms), great food (very reasonably priced ) the staff (friendly, efficient and helpful) and the location is great, everything on your doorstep. 10/10????

Sadie scored 3 / 5 on 29/04/2022

As an elderly person, I failed to get soap out of the fitted dispenser, on either the sink or shower. You would want to be very strong to work either. The restaurant wasn’t open while we were there just the bar. The food was good though.

Nice friendly staff, had a problem with my heating control, lovely guy from reception fixed it immediately, we had a meal deal. only 4 main choices on menu one was roast beef, which was already sold out early,a few more would be help, but your lovely waitress Niamh saved the day and allowed us to choose from Bar menu. so all in all a very nice stay, very convenient location in middle of town.we will be back, Thank u

Stopped off staying at the Prince of Wales on our way further West. We were met by a very friendly and helpful receptionist Aisling. Hotel ideally situated in the middle of Athlone, close to all shopping and pubs. Food in the bar area was very good, no need to look elsewhere, as it was great value. Room was very comfortable and clean with I double bed and a single. Pressure on the water in the shower not so good. Unfortunately we were kept awake till 2.30 with loud music coming from bar. When we were checking out we mentioned this to an equally friendly receptionist Aidrion (not sure of name). She gave us 10% discount on our next visit and a promise of a quieter room. Will we be back??? Most defiantly. Great spot for a weekend with the girlfriends.

Myself and 7 friends went to this hotel for a night away. The Hotel is in a brilliant location, right in the middle of Athlone, beside shops, pubs and restaurants. The staff are excellent, and went out of their way to help one of my friends who was experiencing some difficulty. The hotel is clean and bright, and was excellent value. Overall an excellent experience, thanks to all staff. We will be back again!

Mary scored 4 / 5 on 03/09/2017

Nice hotel great location centre of everything. Cleanliness and service very good. Good selection of hot and cold food for breakfast. Hot food freshly cooked. Our deal included evening meal. Although it was nice the veg was luke warm. Maybe that was just me as I like my food piping hot. My husband had the fish and chips and they were ok. The other meals we had were fine. I would recommend this hotel to other travellers.

John scored 5 / 5 on 12/06/2017

Very satisfied with our stay. Staff friendly and helpful. No worries staying in the hotel again. Thanks to hotels in one , Prince of Wales Hotel, and Lidl who assisted with a booking error.

Rita scored 4 / 5 on 13/02/2017

had a pleasant stay here......staff are very helpful and welcoming. food was good especially the baileys tiramisu.... Room was clean and beds comfortable. Only downside was room was newly painted and had a very strong odour of paint....this will sort itself in time. dogs barking and barrels/crates been shifted caused quite a bit of noise ....this may be a cause of concern for light sleepers. I have stayed before and will certainly stay again...

Gerry scored 5 / 5 on 23/01/2017

My Wife and I spent Friday night ( January 20th) in the Prince of Wales Hotel. We were traveling onwards to Dublin the next morning and used it as a stop over. We were extremely satisfied with the service we received. On Friday evening after booking in we had a nice dinner and some drinks. ( The food was excellent). We had breakfast the next morning before departure and again the food and service were excellent. The bedroom was very pleasant and comfortable . All in all we had a wonderful experience on this occasion and indeed when we stayed there a number of weeks ago.

Good location in the town. Checkin staff were excellent very friendly and helpful. Room was lovely clean and newly decorated. We ate in the bar and the food was very poor. mentioned it to the bar manager and he didn't charge us for our drink which was nice. breakfast was cooked to order and very nice Overall the hotel is a little tired and run down in places definitely not 4star but a very pleasant stay all the same thanks to the wonderful staff.

I stayed here with my partner for our 10 year anniversary, upon booking I asked was there anything special I could do with the room. I recieved a quick response saying they would upgrade the room complimentary. I was over the moon as it was a surprise for my other half. When we arrived we were greeted with a very warm welcome and were informed of the best places to go for a night out with great atmospheres. The room was amazing! So clean and spacious. A bottle of bubbly was waiting on ice for us. Within 10 minutes of being in the room reception called to make sure everything was to our satisfaction. With our room deal we had a two course meal to enjoy in the hotel bar. I love bar food so it was perfect. Extremely attentive staff and the food was perfect. I would 100% stay here again, such a friendly town.

We spent one night here and were quite satisfied overall. The room was smallish but adequate and the double bed was huge and comfortable. It was our wedding anniversary and staff had left a bottle of bubbly and a congratulating card in our room which was a lovely touch. Staff were very friendly and helpful and nothing was too much trouble. Food was very good also. Overall it was a nice place to spend a night or two without being exceptional.

The prince of wales hotel is a lovely hotel. Its just beside the shopping cent re in the middle of Athlone with easy access to all the shops. There was a friendly and helpful blond haired girl on reception who was extremely welcoming and even gave us an umbrella to use whilst out shopping to stop us getting wet.Nice touch. Free parking also which is great. The bar food was very good and the staff were very helpful. Would definitely recommend the fish cakes and the beef stir-fry. Jack and Davy in the bar on Friday night were a great ole band and livened up the place no end....The breakfast Saturday morning was delicious and great to have it served to you. No buffets or queuing. All in all we had a lovely stay at the prince of wales hotel and i will definitely go back.

Coolkilbar scored 2 / 5 on 04/03/2015

Booked a one night dinner B & B deal. Good location and free car parking. The receptionist's major interest was in making sure the rate was paid up front, it was the first thing she asked me. Reception area poor - not very welcoming. There was a hen's group finishing up their weekend in the foyer. We asked about booking a table for dinner in the restaurant and the receptionist said the restaurant didn't open at weekends. This is supposed to be a 4 star hotel??! We were given a voucher for use in the bar instead. Things improved once out of the reception. Bedrooms are clean and bright. Pillows are in short supply though - as are bathroom toileteries. Rooms get very hot at night and turning down the heat doesn't seem to make a difference. Opening a window guarantees no sleep due to the noise outside from a fast food outlet. Dinner in the bar was average, limited choice offered but the bar staff were friendly. Breakfast was better - served til 10.30. Didn't bother with the bar or food - went to the Sheraton bar - much better ambience. Wouldn't rush back.

Hutch scored 4 / 5 on 25/05/2014

The hotel is clean, comfortable and centrally located. The staff were friendly & helpful, the rooms are spacious and well laid out. Breakfast has plenty of choices whether you are a out & out carnivore or a Veggi, or just on a diet? If your stay is going to be over Thurs/Fri/Sat nights and you aren't one of the "clubbing" set ask for a room away from the front of the hotel, as even with triple glazing and a few drinks inside you, the street noise will wake you. Its a great hotel to stay at, location is good, food in the Prince's Bar was OK not as it should be at a 4* Hotel, (mebbe's the head chef was on holiday) but I would still recommend it

Raylo scored 2 / 5 on 14/10/2013

The hotel room and bathroom were fine - Quite comfortable and well heated. Great location - centre of town. There was a terrible smell of chlorine in the lift. Most of the staff were reasonably friendly although they could have been better. We had a bad encounter with a staff member of the nightclub (Karma) which is connected to the hotel, she was extremely rude and more or less told us that we needn't stay at the hotel again.

Dympna scored 5 / 5 on 10/08/2013

J scored 3 / 5 on 10/06/2013

Staff were very friendly and helpful. We stayed on a Thursday night, hotel was very quiet which is why the resteraunt was closed and we had to have our evening meal in the bar, food was delicious but we were eating our desert in the dark as the bar was setting up for an 80's disco ! Breakfast was disappointing................room service was not available, We arrived at 10.10am for breakfast (Breakfast ran until 10.30am)..staff were clearing away the buffet so not much of a selection, the breakfast we ordered was hilarious........i asked for the veggie breakfast which consisted of patato cakes, beans, tomato and mushrooms.........I got half a patato cake, my husband had the full Irish Breakfast whic didn't consist of a patato cake, just wondering where the other half went! No cups on the table for the tea, missing cutlery, no butter for the toast etc.... Room was fine, clean and had everyting we needed.

i spent a while in this hotel with my family and i think it should be said that the staff need a good talking to about their dealing with the public. thay dont seem to make the effort with anyone. the young girl at breakfast tried her best and was the best of a bad lot considering we had a meal and drinks while there. fair play to lidl for giving such a great offer but it has to be said take your eating and drinking down town because this lot would put ya in bad form`` beds comfortable and room clean.. free wifi and tv and usual stuff in room. great for shopping its very central.. free parking all on the plus side for your stay

Mr scored 4 / 5 on 03/11/2012

My partner and I stayed at the Prince of Wales for one night over the Halloween Bank holiday weekend, 28th October. This hotel has little 'Wow' factor, therefore nothing special but for what it is, a small centrally located hotel in the middle of Athlone town with a bit of history, it does a pretty good job at making people's stay a pleasant one. We had a problem with our electronic room key when we arrived and one of the housekeepers, seeing our plight, immediately came to the rescue and got us into our room after varifying our bona fides. We later got the problem fixed at the desk. We arrived late in the afternoon and after relaxing in a pleasant enough room for a couple of hours, with an 'interesting' view, which we hid with slightly soiled curtains, we eventually chose to eat out and we're oh so glad we did because we discovered the wonderful Lock or Locks Restaurant by the water's edge on the Roscommon side in the renovated old Presbyterian church. We had great service there, fantastic food in a beautiful atmosphere at a reasonable cost. Back at the hotel I asked the receptionist for more milk for room tea and coffee and by the time we got to our room there was a knock on the door and I was greeted by a Zombie dripping with blood.....OK slight exaggeration but as we later found out the staff were dressed in horror attire which was kinda cool but not really appropriate for most top hotels. I then experienced a Nightmare..... and my partner had a Green Goblin.....yes cocktails.....[admit it you were fooled there for a second], when we went down stairs again to the bar. When we later returned to our bedroom we had fun figuring out the multitude of taps in the shower before tucking ourselves into our bed on slightly hard matresses. Following morning breakfast was fine, a reasonable variety to choose from. All in all not so memorable an hotel in general but memorable for the staff's service with a smile and their quirkyness. Nothing outstanding but still worth four stars and fantastic value at the Lidl price. Finally I noticed a notice outside one of their conference rooms which comemorated some period of history from 1850 (ish) to 1650 (ish), a mistake suggesting a reversal in time. I'm surprised they still put up the notice? IYes I'd stay here again.

Anon scored 4 / 5 on 31/10/2012

Stayed here for one night at the end of October, room nice and big with a queen size bed. Had our meal in the bar and food was good. Breakfast cooked to order the following morning so was hot and very fresh which you don't get in many hotels anymore. Close to shopping centre and centrally located. It's a fairly lively hotel, could hear the music from the bar in our room up until 2am so just be wary, other than that no complaints.

Lisa scored 5 / 5 on 27/02/2012

Lovely hotel. Our room was overlooking a fire escape but as out trip was mainly a girlie night away with some shopping this didn't matter to us. The Prince of Wales is in an extremely central location with the entrance to the Athlone Town Centre approx 200 metres walk and although it is placed on a busy main street, the double glazing windows are so effective, you never hear hear the traffic. We were within walking distance of shops, hairdressers, & restaurants. Highly recommend this hotel. I liked the fact that breakfast was served until 11 in the morning so a bit of a lie in was an option and the breakfast choice was great and not buffet hot food but cooked to order so was delicious and fresh. Reception staff were most friendly and helpful as were waiting staff. I will most definitely be staying there again in the not too distant future I hope. Also must recommend the restaurant we dined which wasn't part of the hotel, it was called the Olive Grove. It's location is amazing, practially on the River Shannon and we felt like we were on a cruise ship, food was fantastic and all 8 of us had a superb meal at excellent value. Looking forward to my next night away there and the room value through the Lidl website was excellent.

We stayed in the Prince of Wales hotel for two nights 2nd and 3rd Feb 2012. We had a brilliant experience and would certainly recommend it to others. Our room was very spacious with lots of storage space. We had dinner both nights and the food was excellent. Staff were very friendly in reception, restaurant and bar. Breakfast was very good with food cooked to order. It was very busy on the Saturday morning yet everything was served quickly and without fuss. The porridge with honey was lovely. An excellent location - shopping centre literally across the road, free parking and right in the centre of Athlone. We will certainly be returning. Thanks to all. Marie

We stayed for one night on 14th January and really enjoyed our stay. Everything everyone has said in their reviews is spot on. The breakfast was delicious and would recommend the scrambled egg as it was done to perfection. We ate in the restaurant at night and the only negative comment would be that it was too dark at the table we sat at and couldn't see our food very well. We are a couple in our 50s and would definitely go back there again. Cheers Lidl!

We stayed for one night on Saturday 10th December, it was a shopping trip for the girls. The hotel was very central and our experience from check in to our rooms to lunch and evening meal could not have been better. The hotel itself was clean and warm but the staff were just so nice, they kept checking to see if everything was alright. There were lots of little touches like complimentary tea coffee in receiption on departure.

Lovely hotel in an ideal location in the center of Athlone. Our room wasn't very big but it was very nice and really clean. The room included everything you'd expect from a nice hotel, hair dryer / tea & coffee making facilities / ironing board and Iron / safe box. The bathroom was large and very clean with a fabulous shower. The staff were very pleasant and always helpful. We ate on Friday night and the food was fabulous. It was served by a very pleasant and competent young waiter. We then stayed in the main bar for the night which we found to be a very socialable spot. My one reservation about the hotel would have to be the smell from the downstairs toilets. They could badly do with a good cleaning, but this could've been just a problem on this night. As the hotel itself was so clean and everything else was of an exceptionally high standard I wouldn't hesitate but to recommend this hotel to anyone. It's a lovely hotel in the center of Athlone.

very nice hotel, very clean, delicious food served by very efficient, friendly staff [ the best i have come acroos in a while.] lovely well trained staff in all departments of the hotel, rooms very clean. The Saturday night bar disco would not be for us, possibly to do with our age. Would be nice if the lobby was a bit more homely and warm. We would recomend this hotel and we will be back. The Lidl Breaks are great.

I wish to thank you most sincerely for your recent email. We had a lovely stay in the hotel, the room was perfect and all the staff were very helpful from the start of our visit. The room was spotless and the food was very tasty and perfect, we plan to visit again in the future. Thanking You Frank Farragher.

I stayed in the Prince of Wales Hotel last weekend and for the staff alone I'd go back: I had no problem arranging late check out to begin with on the phone. When my partner and I arrived, we were a bit earlier than expected but we were given a different room to the original allocation without fuss. The next day, I got locked out of my room (the key had 'timed out' due to late check out) and when I met the house manager (?) in the corridor she, again without fuss, just let me straight back in. She and the rest of the front of house crew were friendly, professional and efficient. I thought the hotel itself was lovely, and from what I could see the bar (especially the upstairs) was fab. My single gripe would be a small one: there was lifting wallpaper in our bedroom and chipping paint on the ceiling of the bathroom. I skipped breakfast so I can't comment on that but if I am in Athlone again, I would go back to the Prince of Wales! Fionnghuala

Enjoyed my stay in the Prince of Wales Hotel. Room was great but the breakfast service was below par. Lots of breakfast items ran out and were not replenished. It was all a bit chaotic. The hotel was busy but staff should be able to cope. Overall I would stay there again and it was such good value.

Prince of Wales Hotel Athlone Pros: Bedroom clean, comfortable, all facilities as advertised. Cons: Breakfast Service very poor. When the coffee was delivered to the table the waitress didn't notice that there was only one setting for two people. We had to ask for a cup, when that was delivered we mentioned there was only only cutlery for one, when that was provided, she didn't notice there was no milk, the same with a side plate. It seemed as if she had no interest and had to be asked for each item separately. It seems to be more a problem with a lack of training than anything else. The Lift floor needed to be vacuum cleaned, looked likeit hadn't been cleaned in some time. Summary Overall the food was good as was the bedroom, it was just the general feeling of poor service and of uncleanliness. The staff on reception were very helpful, chatty and friendly. The bar staff were also very efficient and friendly.

Great value . The food in the Princes bar was excellent . Great portion sizes and very tasty . The breakfast let the hotel down . We expected the same quality as our evening meal but very greatly disappointed . The hotel is very central and just across from the Athlone shopping centre . The staff of the hotel were very courteous and helpful . Would stay here again .

Stayed in the Prince of Wales hotel on a girls night away, the staff were very helpful although the restaurant staff seemed to be run off their feet!! Rooms were fairly clean and spacious. Overal it was great value for money 49euro for a delicious dinner, bed and a reasonable breakfast. Would definately stay here agan.

Lovely hotel with luxurious spacious rooms. The food was also very good, but the choice was quite limited. The entertainment in the bar was a disco not my cup of tea.

nice hotel nice receptionist staff. huge problem with bar staff lady and lady manageress or so she said. had a drink and took it to dinner from our room and instead of just saying you cant the bar girl told security who threatned us and then we were asked to take our desserts up to our room . talk about telling a child go to his room!! so after telling the so called manageress we were refused service while !still waiting for our desserts. the couple with us and me and my husband took them aside explained our story and then they said ok have our drink which we paid for but desserts never came. we left next day after formal complaint.. not happy with the fact no compensation was made but hope the 2 people who had ideas above their station will get their just desserts seen as we got none!!!!

it may have been beyond control of hotel but we had no water so no toilet sink or shower for 2 days There was a problem with town supply. We had dinner in hotel and 7 hours later our 21 ye old daughter got a v bad tummy infection had to go to gp st 4am it was all v difficult without water. I feel there was v v little in way of apology no sign of a manager only way we were compensated was by 2 small bottles of water. My daughter was back at doctor again since we came home so I have not had time to write to manager. We were charged full price we since have heard of someone who was charged half price. From lidl breaks point of view everything with booking ran smoothly thank you marian

We stayed for one night special inclusive of evening meal. Hotle staf were very friendly and also helpful with details of touristy things nearby. Meal was excellant and Bed very comfortable and room very clean. Our only gripe was the entertainment that night was interupted by a girl constanly wanting to get up and sing (no problem if she could!) I felt the staff should have taken the matter into thir hands. But a very pleasant stay.
